Why are you training crossfit?

Off-late, most people i meet have been asking me one question. What are you training and Why? Some say my picture on face-book has gone viral(sarcastically), while few others have been using me as a subject of mockery in conversations. So i decided to clear everyone's curiosity and put my thoughts in writing.

What Am I Training?

I am currently training  a routine named  "CROSSFIT". For more information on what cross-fit is refer to the link. The workouts include high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, Plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics, strongman and other exercises.

Why Am I Training?

I have to narrate you a story to know why i am training cross-fit. As a kid, my brought up has always been among "so called" bright kids. Cricket was the only outdoor game played, while Gym and fitness were distant words in my dictionary. All my engineering, the question of "What next?" gave me jitters, as i never lived in the "present". When i moved to Kuala lampur(2013-2014) i was more interested in learning the culture, than improve my personality.
Six months (2015) after coming back to India, the entire product management team(10 members) traveled to Ahobhilam for a trek. I realized the weakling of the group was me. All my peers trekked easily, i couldn't. My stomach was bloating and i was severely panting trekking the grizzly steep hills. It was a sight of hatred for myself. That was the moment of enlightenment.

Few months later, i was introduced to cross-fit by Venkat. The moment i entered the box (potens fitness) i knew this was an ideal environment to shed my fears and be myself. Bharat was too good to mesmerize me about what a human body can achieve and a few days later i did my first double under. That was the moment i fell in love with CROSSFIT!
Here is a quick link to my double Under!!

Why Crossfit Over A Gym?

The unique selling point of training cross-fit is that it is carefully nurtured for a group work out.The trainer would ensure that the workouts are performed with finest care preventing any injury.
Gym allows you to work in Silos and one has to be extremely self motivated to hit the gym everyday, while Crossfit enables you to perform workouts in a community. This motivates individuals to set milestones every day with bunch of support from peers.Every performance is recorded on the white board for quick comparison among the community to nourish a competitive spirit. It motivates individuals to perform better.
Since Crossfit is a community work out it provides perfect forum for networking.Individuals from various backgrounds turn up in the box .
Crossfit routines are very intensive that drain body and mind. They are  scheduled for  "One hour" workout every day. This saves time for working individuals like me.
I am fortunate to have associated myself with a group (Teja , Venkat , Bharat, ...) who motivate me to keep hitting the next milestone every day.(Probably associations for life!)

What kind Of Routines Are Followed In Crossfit?

The timings are scheduled to meet the needs of working class. I chose to attend a session between (7 PM and 9PM). A typical  session is divided into three stages

  • Warm up
  • skill
  • Workout of the day

Warm Up: Body needs a quick warm up and some of the exercises include duck walks, lunges, Russian twists, bear crawls, crab walks  and many more....
Skill : This would include certain techniques required to perform the workouts.Skill could include ,double under, rope climbs, box jumps, kipping pull ups and many more. Eventually the skill should be inducted into the work out of the day, where performance will be measured.
Workout  of the day:  This is the set of exercises scheduled for the day. The exercises are supposed to be completed with in a stipulated amount of time. The time could vary from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. Individuals are encouraged to perform as many repetitions  as possible. For instance if an individual performs 3 sets of 12 each dead lifts for two hours in a gym, cross-fit encourages you to complete the same in 15-20 minutes. Workouts include a combination of exercises for different parts of the body. They are more focused on improving the core fitness, while muscles are by products of routines performed every day.

Did I See A Transformation In Me?

I have transformed myself both physically and Mentally. Physically my bloating stomach has reduced and my fitness levels have improved significantly. I have a very controlled diet now.( Alcohol,Rice and fried items are a big no).You could see a transformation in the following picture.

Mentally, i have become very tough. It helps me" rule my mind" than "my mind ruling me". I have come to terms that a human being can do wonders as long as his mind is controlled / trained to persevere the task at hand and live in the present. Training cross-fit is one of best decisions of my life as it brought a discipline to the way i live.I am no longer lethargic and my metabolic activities are quick.

Should Age / Marriage Be Tagged As A Reason?

For all the individuals / friends who have been asking me about this ,i would say "Go have a life". You don't need a "Reason", you need "Realization" to improve your fitness and i strongly believe any mature individual would not baseline personality for marriage.Marriage is not realization but a responsibility!10 years down the line i do not want to regret about things i could have done better ,instead its an attempt to act "NOW". It saddens me when my friends say "Time kaha milta hai". I would say "Chah ho to Raah nikal hi jaata hai"! Trust me age is just a number.Move you ass's right away and act now than repent later.

cheers!

While people chose to party on a friday evening ...we chose workout to better ourselves!!!
